Additional Details

A nice early July 4th oration, in which Baldwin praises the newly-passed Constitution, but is puzzled by the inconsistency of slavery with the founding ideals: "Humanity will mourn that an odious slavery, cruel in itself, degrading to the dignity of man, and shocking to human nature, is tolerated, and in many instances practiced with barbarian cruelty. Yes, even in this land of boasted freedom, this asylum has lost its horrors by the sanction of custom." OCLC locating 8 copies. Evans 20941; Sabin 2911.
