Additional Details

The act is headlined "Fugitive Slave Law" and prints the legislation which was passed less than three weeks prior, on 18 September 1850. The news was greeted with foreboding by Worcester's very active abolitionist community led by Abby Kelley Foster. Enforcement of the law proved difficult in Worcester; in 1854, a slave-hunter was met in town by an angry mob and a hail of rocks.
