An early printing of the first federal act restricting the international slave trade; American ships were forbidden from participating in the trade. It was passed on 22 March 1794, and the first prosecution was of Rhode Island merchant John Brown in 1796. The law was strengthened in 1800, and the importation of human cargo was banned in 1807.
