This circular expresses horror that "the foreign slave nation of Texas will actually be incorporated with these United States" but hopes for a last-minute "triumph be won for liberty and righteousness, of which not this age, if any age in history, has seen the like." It was part of a "last desperate effort in the fall of 1845 by the Massachusetts anti-slavery group to prevent the acceptance by Congress at its coming session of the new constitution of Texas that continued slavery there"--Streeter Texas 1591 (and 1589n).
