Additional Details

This purports to be the memoir of a formerly enslaved man from North Carolina who escapes to a new life in England. It features a dinner with Thomas Jefferson at Monticello, and other celebrity encounters. It is generally believed to be a work of fiction. See the review in the Liberator of 26 November 1847, and the Dictionary of North Carolina Biography. Sabin and some other sources credit the authorship to former congressman Jabez Delano Hammond.
