(SLAVERY & ABOLITION.) Peter Kramer, artist. The Resurrection of Henry Box Brown at Philadelphia. Lithograph, 13 1/4 x 20 inches; wear and soiling at edges, two closed tears extending nearly into the image, laid down and stabilized on Japanese tissue. Philadelphia: Louis Rosenthal, circa 1851

Additional Details

Depicts Henry Brown's famous escape from slavery in a shipping crate from Richmond, VA to Philadelphia. This is one of two variant lithographs of the scene bearing the same title, the other being recorded in Reilly's American Political Prints 1850-4. A copy of the present version is held by the Library Company of Philadelphia, which identifies the four men helping to uncrate the newly liberated Brown. Standing directly behind him and holding the lid is the famed Underground Railroad leader and chronicler William Still. None of either lithograph traced at auction.
