Additional Details

This account book is said to be from coffee mogul Joaquim Ribeiro de Avelar, Visconde e Conde de Ubá (1821-1888), although he is not named here. It covers several properties including the flagship Avelar plantation, the Fazenda do Pao Grande near the village of Avelar north of Rio de Janeiro, as well as properties in Catete, Petrópolis, São Joaquin, and elsewhere. Some of the pages are monthly inventories of camizas (shirts), calças (pants), paletots (jackets), saias (skirts), or vestidas (dresses) issued to dozens of named enslaved people. Other pages are simple dated lists of names.
