Additional Details

This highly unusual photograph shows a young man, perhaps in his twenties, holding a copy of W.O. Blake's classic "History of Slavery and the Slave trade" on his lap. First published in 1859, Blake's work went through numerous printings through the Civil War years. It could be found on the bookshelf of any "right-minded" household along with Frank Leslie's and Harpers' Weekly. As a result, it is one of the most common anti-slavery books to be found in today's collectors' market.
