the scarce first english edition of this important collection of anti-slavery poems, and essays, printing frederick douglass' only sizable piece of fiction,a 74 page novelette titled 'The Heroic Slave.' The latter was based on the true story of a slave insurrection led by Madison Washington aboard the slave ship Creole. On November 7, 1841, while en route from Virginia to New Orleans, the crew was overtaken by the group of slaves who redirected the ship to Nassau in the Bahamas. Once there, the British authorities detained them, but five months later all 19 were freed. Other important contributions by African American writers include James Madison Whitfield's poem 'How Long,' and James McCune Smith's 'John Murray (of Glasgow).'
