a fine association copy belonging to Robert Purvis whose ownership inscription, "Robert Purvis, London, England 1834," appears in pencil on the front paste-down. Purvis (1810-1898) was a radical African-American abolitionist who probably obtained this book while attending the Anti-Slavery Convention in London in 1834. This was an important gathering that included William Lloyd Garrison, Thomas Clarkson, and virtually all the noted abolitionists from both sides of the Atlantic. They had come to celebrate the act of Parliament emancipating the slaves in the West Indies and to form a strategy to put and end to slavery altogether.
