(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) BRITISH GOVERNMENT PAPERS. Instructions for the Guidance of Her Majesty's Naval Officers employed in the Suppression of the Slave Trade. 556 pages plus index. Small folio, nineteenth century 1/4 calf and marbled boards, re-backed in buckram with small, circular gilt library stamp at the base of the spine. London, 1844
A complex legal guide for those naval officers involved in patrolling the West Coast of Africa following the British ban on taking of slaves. Delicate international treaties regarding search and seizure had to be observed while at the same time making judgment calls on what ships might be carrying slaves. While outlawed in 1807, the trade in slaves continued well into the mid-century.
