Additional Details

Mr. G. J. Steyn, a conscious-stricken citizen of the South African Republic, writes to Governor P.E. Wodehouse reporting that bands of 'commandos' were making raids on 'Kaffir' villages killing adults and kidnapping 30 or more children ('black ivory') of the average age from 3 years to 12 years old. They were then taken to an agreed upon place where they were auctioned for £15 to £22 . In further correspondence, Steyn writes that he is being threatened by local Transvaal officials who are in on the kidnappings.
