(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) BROWN, JOHN. To the Friends of Freedom. Broadside, in the form of an "open letter," 9 3/4 x 7 1/2 inches; two minor holograph corrections appear to be in Brown's hand. Lawrence, KS, 1856

Additional Details

A scarce broadside with an interesting twist. Beneath the primary text, in which Brown asks for donations for the cause; there are two printed letters in praise of Brown, one from C. Robinson and another from Gerrit Smith. A printer's error in Smith's letter has been changed from "I know your unshrinking bravery, your self-satisfying benevolence" to "your self-sacrificing" benevolence. A considerable change indeed in the meaning. A comparison with an ALS from Brown, written in 1856, offered in Christie's sale of 18 December 2003 looks very much like the handwriting here.
