This copy is inscribed by the author to her nephew Samuel Hopkins Ver Plank (1829-1909), a retired bank cashier from Geneva, NY who had documented a Fugitive Slave Law kidnapping in his home town as a young man (see Grover, Make a Way Somehow: African-American Life in a Northern Community, 1790-1965, page 34).
