Ellen Craft (1826-1897) and her husband William were slaves on a Georgia plantation. In 1848 they decided to escape to freedom. Ellen was a very light skinned woman, her husband William quite dark. She dressed in men''s clothing, wearing dark glasses and a cloak, and posing as master and slave they made their way North to Philadelphia where William Wells Brown met and escorted them to Boston.
