(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) CRUIKSHANK, ROBERT. John Bull taking a Clear View of the Negro Slavery Question. Hand-tinted political engraving, 9x14-5/8 inches, matted and framed. London, 1826

Additional Details

A biting satirical image reflecting the politics of the day on "the slavery question" and the boycotting of West India sugar by the anti-slavery proponents. "John Bull" peers through a telescope at the Coast of Africa--just as far removed from the issue as physically possible--while a man next to him offers "Pictures of Negro Slavery." Another man holds a sign "Buy only East India Sugar, t'is sinful to buy any other. . ." and so on. A splendid copy of a famous print. Robert Cruikshank (1789-1856) was the brother of noted caricaturist, George Cruikshank.
