RARE OFFICIAL DOCUMENT (SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) Certificate of Freedom for Perry Boone, 'aged 35 years or thereabout.' Partially printed document, accomplished by hand. Folio sheet, with American eagle at the top and notary's blind-stamp at the bottom, creases where folded twice; signed by Boone with an 'X', and the notary, George Guier and witnessed by William Johnson, who also signs with an 'X.' Docketed on the reverse. [Philadelphia], 16th August, 1842
An official document attesting to the fact that Perry Boone was a 'free person of colour' from Baltimore Maryland. Philadelphia was a center for the Underground Railroad and a major port (Port Erie). It is possible that Boone was embarking on a vessel and this certificate would be a protection against slave-catchers as well as unethical ship's agents who often shanghaied sailors for service on British ships.
