Additional Details

During the Civil War, slavery remained in force in some of the Union's border states. Some slaveholders remained loyal to the Union in the war to end slavery. When enslaved men from these areas enlisted in the Union army, the owners were entitled to compensation. Here is one such application. Joshua Winlock enlisted from Blue Spring Grove, Barren County, KY, on 30 September 1864. William Winlock asserted in his application that "I purchased his mother about 25 years ago and have owned Joshua since his birth." Two of his neighbors swore that William had been the owner, and that he was also a loyal citizen. Laid down on verso is a certificate of Joshua's military service, giving his physical description and asserting that he "owed service" to William Winlock, 20 September 1866. Other research shows that Joshua served in the 115th United States Colored Troops for just over a month before his death on 4 November at Bowling Green, KY.
