first edition. Slavery under the Portuguese in Brazil existed from the earliest 16th century settlements there. The author of this pamphlet urged emancipation of Brazil''s population of approximately two million slaves, citing the examples of Great Britain in the West Indies, and Lincoln''s Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. De Brito''s plan however suggested "gradual" abolition under which the children of slave-women would be emancipated beginning that year. Slavery was not altogether abolished in Brazil for another decade. Quite scarce. OCLC locates only 5 copies in the U.S.
