Additional Details

an exceedingly rare image of a young frederick douglass. This portrait was done by the well-known British sculptor and portrait artist William Behnes (1815-1864). The music was composed by Julia Griffiths who later edited "Autographs for Freedom," two collections of anti-slavery pieces, published in 1853 and 1854. Her brother wrote the words, which unfortunately are not present. Douglass had been forced to leave the United States in late 1845. Because of the success of his "Narrative," published earlier in the year, his owner Hugh Auld could not help but hear of the success of his favorite young slave. Douglass returned in March of 1847.
