Additional Details

a rare "uplift" poster, of which we have only handled one other copy. One of the most elaborate of the so-called uplift posters that were pubished in the period following the Civil War, this one has a center occupied by three busts: Frederick Douglass, Hiram Revels and Blanch Bruce; in the four corners are four black Reconstruction politicians, Chase E. Nash, Joseph H. Rainey, Jonathan Lynch and Robert Smalls. Surrounding the three central figures are vignettes of African Americans in slavery times, on the battle field, and in schoolrooms. In the bottom center is an oval portrait of John Brown. We could locate only two copies of this lithograph: Yale and the Library of Congress.
