Additional Details

first edition, warmly inscribed and signed by douglass in the year of publication: "To Miss Adeline Henshaw from her Friend Frederick Douglass, 11th July, 1845." Seth Hinshaw was a conductor on the Underground Railroad. He and his family were Quakers and lived in Greensboro Indiana. Their home was a known stop on the Underground Railroad and Douglass visited with them while touring Indiana. It's not quite clear how Douglass came to sign his book for Adeline. In July of 1845, Douglass was in Rochester, New York where he delivered his famous "Fifth of July" Speech.
