Additional Details

Following extensive campaigning for the Republican Party, and a promise from Garfield himself, Douglass had every expectation to be reappointed City Marshall for Washington, D.C. But Garfield was assassinated and Douglass instead was named Recorder of Deeds, an office which he said in his Autobiography was more to his liking, rather than being the "daily witness in criminal court."
