Additional Details

Davis describes his early life of slavery in Virginia, his career as a Baptist preacher in Baltimore, and his purchase of his freedom. The stated purpose of Davis in publishing this account was "to raise sufficient means to free his last two children from slavery." Original owner Alexander Walker Wayman (1821-1895) was, like the author, an African-American clergyman in Baltimore. Sabin 18870; Work, page 311.
