Additional Details

Hosea Easton (1798-1837) was of mixed African and Native American Wampanoag parentage, originally one of the slaves of Nicholas Easton of Newport, RI. He and his family moved to Boston in 1820's where he delivered this Thanksgiving oration. In it he preached a strong sermon of abolition and racial "uplift" through education.
