Additional Details

A list of six individuals from the estate of Joseph Patterson sold at public auction, describing each with the price realized and an occasional comment: Two of these poor souls were "Bid off by a song for the widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Patterson." Negro Girl Margaret and Negro boy Charlie were both "Bid off by a song" for $401.00 and $166.00, both exceptionally low prices indeed for young slaves. It seems possible that this was a local sale, and that the two slaves were favorites and allowed to be bought by the widow at low prices by tacit agreement. The remaining four slaves all fetched higher prices.
