Additional Details

Samuel Forbes (1729-1827), was considered to be one of early America''s finest "ironmasters." He was partners with Ethan Allen before the Revolution, and ran a highly successful forge in Canaan, Connecticut. The notes from "Negro Jack," "Negro Newport," and "Negro Thom Vanduzen," are signed with an "X"; "Caesar Addison," signed his own name. The sums are not inconsiderable; one being for nine pounds, eighteen shillings and two-pence. These notes may represent advances in pay for labor at the iron foundry.
