Additional Details

The British, who were first to try to eradicate the African slave trade, put into effect a number of statutes beginning with the 1807 ban on the seizure of any African from African soil. To this end, the British instituted a patrol of the West Coast of Africa with an effective fleet of small armed vessels and well-trained armed men. If a ship were suspected of carrying slave, she'd be boarded. And if carrying slaves, they'd be freed and the ship either auctioned off on the spot or scuttled and burned if not usable for anything other than the slave trade.
