Additional Details

Tax receipts from Lee County in far western Virginia, documenting inventories of land and slaves for 14 men of the county. All but two of the receipts record land in addition to slaves taxed. Slaves are categorized by age, being either "under 12 years," "between 12 and 50 years," or "over 50 years"; value is assigned accordingly, with one male slave over 50 valued at a mere $25. Most of the slaves recorded are between the ages of 12 and 50, and valued around $300 each.
