Additional Details

Richard Josiah Hinton (1830-1901) was a close associate of John Brown and tried to organize a jailbreak to help the raiders escape from prison. His 1895 book "John Brown and his Men" is a key biographical source.
The original source image for Brown's face in this portrait was a daguerreotype taken by John Bowles in 1856. Bowles commissioned a Daniel Beard illustration from the portrait for his 1894 book "The Stormy Petrel," and Hinton had this photomechanical reproduction made for his own book later that year, with Bowles's permission. Hinton has inscribed this proof: "John Brown, Kansas, 1856, proof of portrait in John Brown & His Men, to Major J.B. Pond, and Auld Lang Syne, from Richard J. Hinton."
