Additional Details

An early newspaper runaway advertisement, issued before the first weekly newspapers began in America. "A Black Boy, an Indian, about 13 years old, run away the 8th Instant . . . from Putney, having a Collar about his Neck, with this Inscription 'The Lady Bromfield's Black in Lincoln's Inn Fields.' Whoever secures him, or brings him to Sir Edward Bromfield's at Putney, shall have a Guinea." This ad was later cited in many British antislavery texts as a particularly callous example.
