Additional Details

A portrait of the militant abolitionist, produced in the year of his death after a well-known photograph (here credited as being "taken for J.H. Webb"). The publisher Charles H. Brainard was active in Boston for a fairly short period, but also commissioned an important campaign portrait of Abraham Lincoln (see Swann sale 2486, lot 85) done in much the same style.
We can trace no other examples of this accomplished portrait in OCLC or at auction.
