(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) MANUSCRIPT DEED OF MANUMITION. "I Julian Grosjean, of the City of Paris, and County of Bourbon. . .do hereby manumit and set free from my service, my slave Frank Allen, aged about 23 years. . ." Folio leaf, written on one side and docketed on the reverse. Kentucky, 1864

Additional Details

In a perfect example of "Closing the barn door, after the horse was stolen," Mr Grosjean is freeing his slave Frank on the 26th of March, 1864, about a year after the Emancipation Proclamation. Kentucky was a Border State, and Lincoln had once declared "I hope to have God on my side, but I must have Kentucky!" This document would tend to imply that at least some of the citizens of Kentucky were on Lincoln's side.
