(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) MANUSCRIPT EMANCIPATION. John Cleavinger emancipates William, his "negro boy," a slave for life of, about thirty years. Single folio leaf of blue paper, written on one side and docketed on the reverse; creases where folded. Missouri: July 5th, 1859

Additional Details

Two things stand out when reading this certificate of Emancipation; the first is obviously the date, the "Fifth of July," the day after national Independence Day. One can only wonder was this pure coincidence? Or did Mr. Cleavinger see the irony? The other thing is the language of the document. Mr. Cleavinger, though moved somehow to free William, still regarded him as a "boy."
