Additional Details

An interesting case in which five men carried off Mr. Weems' slave George valued at $1000. In addition to the subpoena to seize and hold the thieves, there is an additional charge that they 'did take and carry away and [cause] other harms to the said George and 'against the peace, government and dignity of the State of Maryland,' filed the 6th July, 1818.' One thousand dollars was a great deal of money in 1818. Amazing? Yes, but imagine a free labor machine in peak condition, that would serve you for ten years or more to come.
