A detailed list of the entire contents of the estate of Mr. George Grimes of Bourbon County, Kentucky, including fifteen slaves of different age and sex. The name of the purchaser of each item and slave is listed, in many cases a relative. The random appearance of the slaves mixed in with the rest of the chattel is chilling in its banality. Item number one on the list: "a Negro man Tom," was sold together with "3 iron wedges." Another entry: "Negro man Martin, his wife Jean and 1 child (?) and also their child John, an idiot." The slaves were not sold in any particular order. For example following the sale of a rag carpet, a group beginning with "1 old Negro man named Charles $50 and a boy named Isaac (unsound) at $100," is followed by several more slaves and "a feed wagon." Later in the sale more slaves are offered, and at almost the end of the sale, a relative (Rachel Grimes) purchases "Negro girl Harriet," followed by "a fat steer." The whole estate fetched $49,484.59.
