Additional Details

"John Kelly upon oath complains that . . . a negro slave, Frank, belonging to J.W. Luke & living with T. Jones did use provoking language and actually strike him with a piece of fence rail." Frank is ordered to be apprehended and brought before a justice of the peace "in order that he may be dealt with according to law." The notes on verso show that the owner Luke was billed 50 cents for the arrest and 50 cents for the whipping which followed, in addition to court costs.
