Two marriage certificates from Frederick County, VA. The first is for the marriage of "Joseph Stephens, free negro, and Sarah Armistead, free negro woman" dated 18 October 1853. The 1860 census shows the couple with two young children; Joseph is listed as a mulatto day laborer with $30 in personal property. The second verifies the marriage of "Jerry Jackson a free negro man and Abby Robinson a free negro woman," dated 19 April 1853. The certificates are handsomely engraved with romantic motifs.
