Additional Details

The 26 August issue includes a confused and nervous first report of Nat Turner's Rebellion, which took place some sixty miles to the south in Southampton County, Virginia. With 55 whites dead at the hands of their angry slaves, the Enquirer thundered, "These wretches will rue the day on which they broke loose upon the neighboring population." The 22 November issue features a brief notice on Turner's execution, written with surprising respect: "He exhibited the utmost composure throughout the whole ceremony, and . . . told the sheriff in a firm voice, that he was ready. Not a limb or muscle was observed to move."
