Additional Details

a rare piece of english abolitionist music, signed by composer henry russell on the front page. Originally part of Russell's larger work, 'Negro Life.' OCLC locates only 3 copies. Henry Russell, 1812-1900 was born into a prominent Jewish family, though it was a visit to a Presbyterian church and the sound of the pipe organ that drew him in the direction of Christian music. He was active as a composer and a champion of social causes, including the abolition of the slave trade. Some of his songs, and in all probability this one, were performed by the Hutchinsons, the noted American abolitionist musical family.
