Additional Details

This ceremony was organized by Jesse Max Barber (1878-1949), a Philadelphia dentist and activist who served on the executive board of the N.A.A.C.P.; he is standing to the right. The note on verso is apparently in his hand. It reads "Dr. Barber at John Brown's grave, Lake Placid, N.Y. This photo ought to become historic. According to the press, this was the first wreath laid on the old hero's grave since 1859. J.M.B." The event was described in the Orwell Citizen of Vergennes, VT in its 18 May 1922 issue.
