Additional Details

an exceedingly rare complete set of these cards designed by Henry Louis Stephens (1824-1882), and lithographed by James Fuller Queen (1820-1886). They tell the story of a young black man before he was auctioned once more into slavery, his flogging by both white and black overseers, his escape to freedom his enlistment in a black regiment and his hero's death in battle. The message on these cards is quite revolutionary even for wartime Union consumption. The only other set of these cards noted in standard records is in the holdings of the Library Company of Philadelphia.
