A complex letter from Stevens (1778-1860) discussing the sale of a Negro man named Joseph, and suggesting that he might "bring more from a Negro purchaser," a possible pardon for another man who seems to have been in the wrong place at the wrong time; and a touching note to Ninian Pinkney (1776-1826) regarding a delay in the execution of a Negro woman: "PS When I signed the death warrant for the Negro woman in Baltimore, we thought it might be possible, an application might be made for pardon--or change of sentence . . ."
