First edition of a biography of the English abolitionist Granville Sharp, containing two of his tracts as appendices. It is most notable for containing the earliest known published portrait by the African-American engraver Patrick Reason (1816-1898). Reason, born in New York as Patrice Rison to parents from Haiti and Guadeloupe, was 19 years old when he engraved this portrait. He was best known for his stipple engraving of a kneeling woman, with the caption "Am I Not a Woman and a Sister?" (see above). Reason's portraits appeared in many notable books and periodicals.
