Additional Details

Tappan writes: "I have just read the speech on The Expulsion of a Senator that you had the kindness to send to me. How any Senator after such a presentation of facts and arguments can hesitate to vote aye, on the question of the passage of the resolution before the Senate, I am utterly unable to imagine. Off with his head! So much for B. Yours Truly, L. Tappan." The letter refers to the expulsion of Senator Jesse Bright of Indiana for "disloyalty" stemming from a letter he wrote to Jefferson Davis during the war.
