Additional Details

The next time someone tries to tell you that the Civil War wasn't really about slavery, and that the Confederates seceded over "states rights," you can show them this envelope, produced in the Confederacy. It is illustrated with a boldly engraved image of a snake broken into 15 segments, each representing a state of the proposed Confederacy; Delaware and Maryland are included. This "Unite or Die" image was appropriated from the masthead used in patriotic newspapers during the American Revolution. The caption is a quote from Jefferson Davis: "SLAVE STATES, once more let me repeat, that the only way of preserving our slave property, or what we prize more than life, our LIBERTY, is by a UNION WITH EACH OTHER."
