Additional Details

This broadside was issued by the congressional re-election campaign of Pennsylvania's Henry Augustus Philip Muhlenberg (1782-1844). It advertises Muhlenberg's principled defense of his house servant against fugitive slave charges: "Pat, a negro servant in his family, was watched for some time by suspicious strangers--after a lapse of a few days, the house of Mr. Muhlenberg was authoritatively entered by them and a violent effort was made to capture and pinion poor Pat. Mr. Muhlenberg interfered and released the unfortunate being, whose greatest crime was the colour of his skin." The broadside concludes with a sequel to the story, where Muhlenberg was sued by the alleged slave-owner, and paid $170 to preserve Pat's freedom.
