Additional Details

We have tentatively dated this to the mid-19th century, based on the stamp of the maker, "W. E. & F. Newton, Globe-Makers to the Queen," which appears twice on the wooden frame of the slide. The Newton family are among the best-known English globe makers. The scene depicts a group of sailors in a long-boat; four are rowing while one gives directions and another in the front of the boat threatens the two Africans with a long spear-like weapon.
