a property theft and vandalism claim, made by the manager of mount vernon, consisting of a list of the stolen ('liberated') property, which of course included mount vernon's slaves. The slaves were taken, along with sundry articles by the 16th New York Volunteer Regiment. The list names Jim Mitchell, then 66 years old, who had been on the Washington family estate since the age of fourteen. this lot includes a rare carte de visite of jim mitchell taken on April 15, 1870 at the age of seventy-five. A note in pencil on the reverse stating that Mitchell was 83 at the time of the sitting in 1870, simply does not jibe with the stated age of Mitchell on the 1861 claim. While Mount Vernon was agreed by combatants to be kept 'neutral' during the Civil War, the estate was visited by hundreds of people, both soldier and civilian. Neutral or not, a great deal of property was taken, in addition to the slaves. The present is a formal complaint made up by John Augustus Washington's estate manager. General Winfield Scott had ordered the estate to be neutral, but as the present list shows, when the estate's slaves were liberated, so was food, farming equipment, carpenter's and blacksmith's tools and other sundry goods.
