Thomas Clarkson and William Willberforce are the two names most closely associated with the abolition of the African slave trade; Clarkson, in the private sector, and Wilberforce, in government. In April of 1791, William Wilberforce introduced the first bill ever before Parliament to abolish the African slave trade (defeated 163 to 88). A version of his report, titled "An Abstract of the Evidence," was printed in London in 1791. It included the now famous engraved plate showing slaves in the hold of a slave ship. The present report and proposal for the end of the taking of any "African Negro from the Coast of Africa," was probably Wilberforce's second before Parliament. After repeated tries, the slave trade was banned in 1807.
